About Penny Harvest Penny Harvest, a program of Solid Ground and Common Cents, is a year-round series of service-learning activities that help students apply classroom learning to real-world problems. For over 16 years, Penny Harvest has worked hand-in-hand with schools in Seattle/King County, rallying students to make a difference in their neighborhoods.
The excitement begins in October with a coin drive, where students search their homes and neighborhoods for idle pennies and other coins to donate. It continues in January when each school that meets a “25-Sack Challenge” receives $1,000 to form a Philanthropy Roundtable. Student leaders sit on these roundtables and allocate the money raised to make grants and fund student-led service projects in their communities.
In 11/12 alone, nearly 9,700 students at 40 schools collected 469 canvas sacks (more than 7 tons of coins!) raising a total of $50,496.27. From February through April, all of these schools will convene Philanthropy Roundtables to identify community needs, make grants and complete Neighborhood Service Projects. Every penny collected by students is allocated by students: Kids collect, kids decide.
Anyone passionate about youth philanthropy is encouraged to get involved by donating their time (become a PH volunteer), talent (help raise funds for PH) or treasure (make a monetary donation).
